We consider the potential for Smart TVs to replace set-top boxes for free-to-air platform/aggregation services and Pay TV (whether Pay TV providers pursue an ‘operator-as-an-app-among-apps’ approach or the STB-less ‘direct-to-TV’ model where the operator is the default application and home screen on hardware retailed by them or someone else). This presentation then considers if Smart TVs will make BYOD streaming pucks redundant. Will consumers seeking SVOD and FAST, etc., settle on a Smart TV hardware+OS combination as their primary entertainment solution, and use that for years, or will they want to switch among connected TV OS/UX/content ecosystems by using peripheral streaming pucks in HDMI slots? This presentation considers the extent to which Smart TVs will take more responsibility for content distribution/aggregation, and the extent to which ‘peripheral’ connected TV devices or platform operator STBs will be needed in future.
