BT Group unveiled its new Multicast Assisted Unicast Delivery (MAUD) technology in December, which represents a breakthrough in the delivery of streamed live TV, promising to vastly reduce distribution bandwidth and costs, and improve the reliability of delivery of peak viewed events. MAUD uses a single shared stream in the network to deliver thousands or millions of individual unicast streams, and is transparent to player applications, so there is no impact on server infrastructure, apps or consumption devices. We will hear about some of the technology detail behind MAUD, including how it works and how it is being implemented into BT’s broadband network. The likely impact on delivery costs, picture reliability and quality, carbon footprint and even the QoE for VOD (thanks to network relief) is explored.
