DVB-I provides a transition roadmap for more converged hybrid broadcast/broadband distribution, and eventually pure IP streaming distribution of TV, and aims to support the linear programme guide experience in the streaming space. It supports up/down IP channel zapping, ‘Now & Next’ information within streamed channels, and even Restart (harnessing HbbTV, for example). Any assigned channel slot can be filled with either a broadcast or a streamed version of the same channel, depending on the connectivity used. DVB-I is a significant innovation for broadcasters, the programme guide and the wider UX, and this discussion focuses on the key learnings from the two ‘DVB-I Pilot Germany’ proofs-of-concepts during 2022-23. You can hear details about the implementation of the common service list and the successful integration of HbbTV for ‘Red Button’ services including links to on-demand catalogues. There is an update on the next steps for Germany and elsewhere in Europe.
