YouView is the television OS/UX provider that powers the discovery and viewing experiences across EE TV, TalkTalk TV, Sony TV and now Freely. In this discussion we explore the technology advantages and challenges associated with two innovative platform/device combinations YouView has helped its operator clients develop: the operator HbbTV OpApp running on CE partner Smart TVs (as seen with Freely) and the operator app running on Apple TV 4K set-top boxes made available as one of the operator STB options (as seen at EE TV). There is a special focus on how an operator becomes the default live/linear TV provider on third-party hardware using either the HbbTV OpApp or the ‘standard’ app model. This conversation looks at UX best practice when presenting streamed channels in a full linear programme guide, including when (in the case of Freely) those streamed channels could be mixed with broadcast-input channels.
