Caroline Gammell is Assistant Editor at The Independent and oversees the digital publisher’s international content, which includes sending its most senior correspondents to conflict zones around the world. The Independent is expanding its world news team to produce more award-winning and in-depth content across teams in the UK, India and the US.


Caroline has been a journalist for 25 years, starting at the Press Association where she became chief reporter before moving to The Telegraph for nine years as a senior reporter and then onto the news desk. She has reported from multiple places around the world including Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Australia, Bali, Portugal and the Arctic Circle. Caroline worked on the investigations desk at the Mail Online before joining The Independent in 2021. As well as her international responsibilities, she works on campaigns and longer-term projects, as well as liaising closely with colleagues on the UK news desk.
